With AI moderation an open-ended question generates probing questions in real time, built on what the respondent has just written. Use it when a one-line answer isn’t enough and you want the reasons behind what you’re reading.

Configuring the AI follow-up

Add an open-ended question

Insert an Open-ended block into the flow.

Write the question

Set the text and, if needed, add a short supporting description.

Enable the AI follow-up

Turn on the AI follow-up option in the configuration panel.

Define Goal and Behavior

State the goal of the question — which aspects or topics you want the AI moderator to dig into — and the tone of voice to use when probing (professional, user-friendly, teen and so on).

Try it in Preview

Use Preview mode to check that the follow-up is consistent with the goal and tone you set.
Avoid vague instructions like “do a follow-up”. Go for specific requests: “ask for the decisive factor and one suggestion for improvement”.

Question: “What kind of diet do you follow?”Goal/Behavior: “Collect the reasons behind the user’s choice, use a user-friendly tone full of emoji.”

Multiple follow-ups on open-ended questions

On an open-ended question you can run several follow-ups in a row, so the probing goes deeper instead of stopping at the first reply.

Select the open-ended question

In the Builder click the Open-ended question to open the configuration panel on the right.

Turn on AI Follow-up

In the panel, enable the “Enable AI follow-up” option.

Set the maximum number

In the Maximum probing questions field choose how many follow-ups the AI is allowed to generate.

The respondent experience

  • The text entered in the open-ended question is analyzed in real time.
  • If they answer with audio, the respondent can view and check the transcript before submitting.
  • The AI proposes a short, targeted follow-up based solely on the goal and tone you configured: it doesn’t inherit the description of the open-ended question.
  • Open-ended answers are shown with a more readable, structured layout.
  • Once the probing is done, the respondent moves on automatically to the next block, following the conditional logic you set.
Blocks with AI moderation enabled are marked with a subtle rainbow highlight, so you can spot the AI-powered questions on the canvas at a glance.

AI moderation on the “Other” option

On single choice questions with the “Other” option enabled you can turn on AI moderation. Free-text answers entered through “Other” are moderated automatically to ensure quality, consistency and relevance.
